This is a very attractive modern Italian violin by Andrea Pontedoro, made during his period of residence in Edinburgh. Andrea is a fine maker who draws influence from the De Bonis family of his native Calabria. You can read more about him here. The model is individual, the wood is superb, the varnish rich and subtly shaded. This violin was commissioned by a leading Scottish professional, and has been in professional use for the last 8 years. Apart from the odd dunt and scratch, it’s in excellent condition, with no cracks or damages.
Unusually for a modern violin this instrument has a warm and pliant sound, very full under the ear and very musical. In tonal character it sounds the way it looks – rather golden yet fresh and energetic. For its price I think it’s quite extraordinary. It’s not a concerto violin, but that wasn’t the maker’s intention – its character is more intimate and seductive. The tone is very well balanced – all parts of the register are fruity and expressive. And although this is a modern instrument, it’s had some serious playing and has done all the settling in it needs to do. In conclusion, a beautiful sounding violin and a real looker …
