WE Hill & Sons Violin Bow, London circa 1935

£8,500

WE Hill and Sons Violin BowHill bows are loved the world over for their reliability and exquisite workmanship. Here we have a rare gold mounted Pajeot model bow, probably the work of Sydney Yeoman.

If you think of bows in terms of cars, a gold mounted Hill with a WE Hill & Sons brand is like a customised Rolls Royce – supremely reliable, a very smooth ride, lots of room in the boot, and a certain head-turning quality of self-satisfaction! This is an unusually interesting example with a very elegant head design inspired by Pajeot. The stick is of very dark red pernambuco, mounts are gold and ebony with wonderfully opalescent mother of pearl slide and heel plate. The condition is near-perfect and the whalebone lap is original.

Not all Hill bows are created equal, and sometimes the sticks can be floppy or overly stiff. However, the archetypal Hill has a strong stick with a smooth response and a broad fruity tone, ideal for orchestral professionals. This is such a bow, big and confident, with an utterly imperturbable legato and a cheeky spring. Elegant and mature in playability as much as in looks, and a very collectable bow too.

Length 74.3cm, weight 59.2 grams
