This is one of the best Caussin violins we have seen – it’s a lovely Strad model in excellent condition, and with a rich, open sound.

Caussin instruments stand very firmly outside the mainstream of French making, with a unique approach to the copying of Italian models and an innovative style of antiquing. No two Caussin violins look the same, although they are at the same time quite unmistakable.

This particular instrument drew some admiration from the French experts. It comes very close to the Vuillaume aesthetic, though in some ways it’s nicer than a Vuillaume, softer around the edges and with more wood visible beneath the varnish.

The condition is outstanding with no cracks or damages, just some fingernail wear along the treble side of the fingerboard.

This is a great sounding violin, warm and pliable with a complex tone – it also has great response and dynamic range. Unlike many instruments, it sounds good whether you play hard or merely tickle it with the bow.

It makes a big sound which radiates into the room and fills the space, and it would be an excellent choice for a budding soloist.

If only all violins were this good – it does everything a violin should, effortlessly…!
