Garner Wilson Viola Bow, Dingwall circa 2000

Garner Wilson Viola Bow
Garner Wilson was one of the last of the Hill makers, and his work embodies the Hill tradition. Made with precision, well balanced, utterly reliable …

This is a lovely gold-mounted viola bow by Garner ‘Tug’ Wilson, who trained at Hills and worked there between 1960 and 1966. We used to buy bows directly from Garner until his untimely death in 2013, and I always enjoyed chatting with him. He was a very serious craftsman, and his bows have proved their worth over many decades.

This bow is in excellent condition – bought directly from the maker and well cared for ever since. The round-section stick is very good – camber and spring are tip-top. The frog has some minor marking just behind the thumb projection on the player’s side, otherwise it’s very clean.

I’ve always rated Garner Wilson bows, and they are always popular with players. This bow is quite typical, probably lighter and more nervy than most, but still very solid and dependable. It has quite a bright sound but with plenty of core, it sits very comfortably in the hand, and it’s pretty easy to throw around. A great all-rounder which would suit a young professional on a budget …
