This is a fine sounding modern Italian violin by Roman maker Giorgio Corsini.
Giorgio Corsini was closely involved with Rodolfo Fredi, working as his assistant before taking over his workshop in 1949.
His style is very distinctive and unmistakably Italian, bold and adventurous in design and eschewing any form of antique-ing.
This example has a beautiful golden varnish which sadly doesn’t photograph well! The wood is excellent – the spruce has a wonderful fleck in the grain, and the heavily flamed and quilted back is spectacular.
Condition is generally excellent, though there’s one well restored crack in the upper left table. Otherwise there are very few signs of use.
This is a spectacularly good sounding violin – brilliant, powerful but also sweet and sugary. For a modern instrument it’s unusually willing, and overall it’s a joy to play. Quite a complex and rich voice, but also great articulation and a nice ‘pop’ to the start of the note.
This would be a great choice for a young soloist on a budget.
