Giovanni Grancino is the most respected maker of the Milanese school. This example is built on a grand Amati pattern, and it’s a first class concert instrument.
This is a bold and beautiful violin, very typical in its wood choice with very marked latewood in the table grain and a beautiful plain oppio back with just a hint of flame. The original flanks in the back are also very characteristic of this maker.
There are some well executed restorations, but nothing out of the ordinary for a 17th century violin. There are several well restored cracks to the table, including a post patch. There’s a small piece of replaced edgework to the upper left of the back, and the original volute is grafted onto a new pegbox.
The original varnish is unusually well preserved.
This is a big instrument with a fresh, clear tone and excellent projection, well suited to solo performance.
