This is a very fine and rare viola by Giuseppe Guadagnini, the son of GB Guadagnini also known as “Il Soldato” – it’s a very attractive later example made in the style of the father.
Guadagnini is one of the great names in the history of violin-making. Guiseppe Guadagnini (1753-1805) was apprenticed to his father GB Guadagnini, and this particular instrument is very close in style to his father’s work, also in wood choice, and above all in the varnish.
It’s unusually well preserved in spite of having enjoyed serious professional use. There are several relatively insignificant cracks to the table, above each f-hole, to the right hand corners, and in the lower left, but there are no voice cracks. The varnish is exceptionally well preserved.
