I had been considering buying a small viola for quite a while and discovered Martin Swan’s website during idle internet googling. The big appeal for me was being able to try out and compare several smaller instruments – and indeed I had a few to choose from in the end.
The English viola I bought from Martin is over 200 years old, and definitely punches above its weight. The sound is very mellow, but with real responsiveness. The condition of the instrument was exactly as Martin described it and it was an easy decision for me to buy it. It has been much admired and I’ve been quick to recommend Martin Swan to my string playing friends in Scotland.
