This is a fine cello bow by Joseph Arthur Vigneron – it’s a very nice example in good condition.
JA Vigneron (père) is one of the more interesting makers of the late 19th century – his bows have an individual and slightly rustic aesthetic, suggesting a man who was uninterested in the opinions of his peers, and who forged his own path through life.
This cello bow is very typical, unfussy and plain but supremely fuctional. The stick is of round section mid-brown pernambuco with a wild random figure, mounts are silver and ebony.
Condition is very good – minimal wear to the handle, a touch of thumbnail wear to the underside of the stick in front of the frog, There’s a small split to the audience side of the ivory face, and the button has a later reinforcing pin.
