This is a very well preserved Tubbs violin bow from around 1890 – a good strong stick with that unique buttery Tubbs sound.

James Tubbs is a maker unlike all others – please do read our article about him.

This is a classic Tubbs bow from the best period, typical in all respects. It’s been well looked after and is in excellent condition – some negligible wear to the top facets of the handle, but otherwise exemplary. Even the mother of pearl looks to be original.

The stick is of round section dark red pernambuco of excellent quality – mounts are silver and ebony.

Tubbs bows are very variable in strength, and the weakest are like cooked spaghetti … but the better Tubbs bows are wonderful, and this is such a bow.

Quite stiff as Tubbs goes, but still with that warm and rounded feeling in the middle of the stick.

Excellent weight and balance, and a smooth opulent sound that you can only get from a Tubbs!
