Another great Tubbs, this one from around 1900 – well preserved though not pristine, and with a strong nervy stick.

This bow dates from around 1900 – at this time James was ‘retired” and the work was done by his son Alfred, but given the character of the father we can be quite sure he grumbled about every little detail; read our article about Tubbs here.

Unusually for a bow of the period the stick is of very light orange-brown pernambuco, untreated and beautifully flamed. Round section as always, mounts of silver and ebony, the plain frog being the particular feature of Tubbs bows from around 1900 onwards.

The condition is very good -there’s a bit of wear to the audience side of the handle but that’s about it.

This bow has all the qualities we have come to appreciate in a Tubbs – it has that smooth low-slung opulence and the golden sound – but it also has a nervy brilliance which is less usual. These elements in combination make for a really great bow with serious solistic potential – stable, very controllable, yet exciting.
