The Penzel family have been making bows for over a century, and are still in business. K. Gerhard Penzel (1929-2017) was the third generation of the family. This bow is their top of the range “exquisit” model in gold and tortoiseshell, and is a superb playing stick in near mint condition.
This is quite a blingy bow with gold aond tortoiseshell mounts and an inlaid adjuster. The stick is of octagonal section red pernambuco with a dramatic flame – really fine wood. The condition is excellent with no damage or significant signs of use other than a bit of erosion to the brand.
The mounts on this bow aren’t just for show – they are chosen to match the quality of the stick, which is outstanding. It’s of medium strength, very well balanced, and giving a lot of feedback in the fingers. The tone is broad and very full without distortion, ideal for warming up a slightly thin sounding violin.
A really fine example of high level German traditional bow-making, and a joy to use and to admire.
