Thomas Perry is probably Ireland’s best-known maker – this example is a lovely early Stradivari model, though with a later head.
This is a well preserved Thomas Perry from the late 18th century, loosely based on the Betts Stradivari. Very flat arching, exaggeratedly hooky c-bout curves – this is a sophisticated violin.
The condition is generally good – there are two cracks leading up from the top of the treble f-hole, a wing crack on the same side, and a rather visible scratch between the treble f-hole and the bridge. The back seam has been reglued, and the neck and scroll appear to be later.
This is a great sounding violin with a broad fruity sound. Very well balanced throughout the register, nice and gutsy on the G and clear and musical in the high reaches of the E.
Powerful and responsive, equally at home with classical or traditional repertoire. Easy to play, adaptable and willing!
