This is a superb Dominique Peccatte violin bow with some minor restoration – an outstanding bow for a soloist at an affordable price.
Dominique Peccate surely needs little introduction – only bows by FX Tourte are more valued by musicians, and whilst some Tourtes are too soft or too light for modern technique and repertoire, a Dominique Peccatte is a much more reliable affair.
This example is from Peccatte’s Paris period when his work was at its best. The stick is of round section orange-brown pernambuco with a beautiful random figure. Mounts are silver and ebony.
The bow is in a good state of restoration – there is a small piece of new wood in the top of the head, very neatly done and without consequence for the structural integrity of the stick. The handle facets are quite rounded, and this is clearly a bow that’s had some use. The button is of the period but not original to the bow. Otherwise the condition is very good.
From a technical and sonic point of view this bow is outstanding. As with all the best Peccattes, the immediate sensation is that there’s just MORE…
The stick is lively and malleable but also supremely stable – the sound is big and enveloping but also clean and noble.
Weight and balance are perfect.
In other words, an exceptional bow for a soloist, and at a very fair price.
