This is a beautifully preserved Hill cello bow from the 1920s bearing a maker’s mark for Albert Leeson.
The bows made by the Hill workshops before WWII are admired for their economy of style and for the exactitude of the work. This example bears a number 3 on the silver face, denoting that the stick was made by Albert Leeson, who worked for Hills between 1920 and 1946. The handle and the underslide bear a “O” assembly mark.
The “Hill” brand was the second level of quality for silver /ebony mounted bows, but there’s no evidence of that here other than the half-mounted frog.
The round stick is of exceptional orange-brown pernambuco, the ebony is dense, and the work is first class throughout.
The bow has been very well looked after, and the handle shows no signs of wear – the only issues to report are some scratches to the lower head and a small amount of thumbnail wear to the thumb projection of the frog.
