This is a very nice early 20th century “Hill” branded violin bow from the Hill workshop – it’s a powerful bow for a strong player.
Here’s another good Hill from the 1920s, branded Hill, most likely the work of William C Retford. It has a plain ebony half mounted frog and a silver adjuster with a turned ebony cap.
The stick is of round section dark orange-brown pernambuco with a very subtle random figure.
The condition of the bow is excellent – very little wear, just a bit of roughness to the varnish in the upper part of the stick.
This is a big bow with a big sound – quite dark and definitely muscular. The stick is of medium strength, with a smooth legato and an easy off the string elasticity.
The perfect bow for an orchestral player – just sit it on the strings and lean back!
